Illiteracy means the inability to read and write. Illiteracy is a curse because it is that lowers down human beings’ vision, Outlook, behavior, and in a world. All aspects of life. Illiteracy is a great social evil because it creates different kinds of social evils and vices and prevents social progress and development. It is the root cause of ignorance, superstition, backwardness, poverty, and many more.

Causes of Illiteracy

There is a Binary relation between and poverty, and illiteracy and underdevelopment. Property is the main cause of illiteracy and vice versa. similarly, underdevelopment cause as much the same way illiteracy is the cause of underdevelopment. There are other causes too. Overpopulation, lack of Awareness etc.are responsible for illiteracy. Colonial rule or legacy, and lack of effective govt. The policy is two other major causes of illiteracy.

Bad effects of Illiteracy

The effects of illiteracy are multifarious. Due to illiteracy, an individual cannot distinguish Between right and wrong. They also remain unaware of their rights and responsibilities. This kind of inability and unawareness are responsible for various individual and social backwardness, superstitious beliefs and Attitudes, etc. As a result, crimes and lawlessness, low income and low living standard, deprivation, and exploitation all these make their room in society.

Many do not have knowledge about food and nutrition. So they suffer from various kinds of diseases. In a word, illiteracy is the cause of poor socio-economic conditions, high mortality rate, low life expectancy, child -labor and child marriage, and high growth rate of population.

Agin, in order to improve the poor condition of the illiterate people, govt.has to spend a huge sum of money on different programs. This affects other sectors and hinders long -term development of the country.

Illiteracy and human development

The population of a country is termed as its human resources. The educated and skilled manpower of the country is its great asset. But if the people are illiterate, they became a great burden for the country. Illiterate people cannot contribute much to the social and economic development of the country. If people are educated and skilled, they Become a tremendous potential for development and progress. So illiteracy is a great loss of this potential human energy and resources.

The environment

The environmental population is one of The major concerns of our time. And is a primary cause of environmental pollution. Illiterate people do not know how to protect the empowerment from being spoilt. They cut down trees indiscriminately, destroy our natural resources and environmental elements without considering the consequences. Thus, it accounts for environmental abuse and sustainable development.

How to remove illiteracy

As illiteracy is the root cause of all evils, it should be the number one agenda of govt.has taken various measures like making primary education free and compulsory, girls ‘education up to higher secondary level free, and the highest allocation for education in our national budget, still the measures are inadequate. Govt must ensure that the money is being utilized properly and effectively.

Govt needs to set up more educational institutions, make reading materials cheap and available, and guaranteed employment after completing education. Again private sectors, NGO’S ‘academician and patrons of learning should come forward to spread the light of education in every house, We have also to make our people aware of the importance of education. Media can play a great role in this regard.
